작가의 말 (Artist's Statement)
진실은 그것에 관하여 우리가 만들어낸 믿음이다. 나는 살아있는 연극으로서의 삶을 믿으며, 그것들이 부딪히는 과정에서 만들어지는 여러 개의 겹쳐진 진실에 관심이 간다. 우리는 어떤 정체성이라는 역할을 맡아 이 연극에 참여며, 삶은 그것을 의식하는 이상하고도 특별한 순간들, 그리고 그것을 잊어버린 대부분의 순간들, 결국 둘 중의 하나다.
나의 작업은 삶에 덧대어진 장치들이다. 그것들은 뚜렷하게 보이는 것들을 흐리게 만들고, 멀쩡해 보이는 것들에 균열을 내며, 오류를 발생시키 위해 만들어진 것들이다. 나의 일은 사건을 생성하기 위한 조건들을 다루는 것이며, 조건들의 조합이 생성하는 상황과 장면, 사건을 증언하는 것이다. 이것은 이상한 기능을 위한 유사-장치들이다. 이것은 스스로 생성되는 장면이자, 구조다. 이것은 집단적인 심리극이다.
Truth is the beliefs we create about it. I believe that life is a living theatre and I am interested in the multiple, overlapping truths that are created when they collide. We all participate in this play by taking on the role of some identity, and life is one of those strange and special moments when we are aware of it, and most of the time when we have forgotten it.
My art is devices superimposed on life. They are made to blur the obvious, to crack the apparently intact, and to create mistakes. My work is concerned with the conditions for the creation of events and testifies to the situations, scenes, and events that combinations of conditions create. These are pseudo-devices for strange functions. This is a self-generating scene, a structure. This is a collective psychodrama.
작가에 관하여 (About the Artist)
박관우 작업의 중요한 화두는 '현상'으로서의 인간이다. 그는 동시대의 과도기적 상태에 관심을 기울이며, 그 가운데에 놓인 인간 현상과 세계에 대한 자의식적 '체험'을 탐구한다. 그는 감각을 통한 의식과 자의식의 문제, '믿음'이 매개하는 실재와 허구의 문제, 그리고 이주와 정체화의 문제 등을 구체적인 작업 주제로 다루어왔다.
박관우는 현상의 포착을 위한 장치를 만들고, 미시감(jamais vu)을 불러 일으키는 장면을 연출하며, 주객의 경계가 사라진 집단적 상황극을 연출하거나, 오직 증언들을 통해서만 존재할 수 있는 특수한 체험을 설계하는 등, 기존의 분류를 벗어나는 경계선의 시공(liminal space-time)을 그의 예술을 통해 실험한다. 퍼포먼스와 해프닝, 이벤트의 방식을 이어 받으면서도, 타인과 공유될 수 없는 방식으로 관객 '개인'의 배타적 체험을 유발한다는 점은, 그의 작업이 가진 중요한 특징이다.
홍익대학교에서 디지털미디어디자인을 전공하며 사용자 경험과 물리적 인터렉션에 관하여 공부한 작가는 이후, 영국 왕립예술학교에서 조각을 다시 전공하며 그의 배경을 동시대 예술의 영역에서 확장해왔다. 그는 현대차그룹의 '제로원', 국립현대미술관의 고양레지던시, 호반문화재단의 H아트랩 입주작가에 선정되어 작업하였으며, 그의 작품들은 현대차그룹, 한국문화에술위원회, 서울문화재단, 플랫폼엘 컨템포러리 아트센터 등의 여러 공모에 거듭 선정되었다.
An important theme in Kwanwoo Park's work is the human being as a 'phenomenon'. Focusing on the transitional state of the contemporary world, he explores human phenomena and the self-conscious 'experience' of the world in the midst of them. Specific themes of his work include issues of consciousness and self-consciousness through the senses, the relationship between reality and fiction mediated by faith, and issues of migration and identification.
Through his art, Park experiments with liminal space-time that defies conventional categorization by creating devices to capture phenomena, staging scenes that evoke a sense of jamais vu, creating collective situation plays where the boundaries of the audience disappear, and designing special experiences that can only exist through testimonies. It is an important characteristic of his work that it inherits the modes of performance, happenings, and events, but triggers the exclusive experience of the viewer's 'individual' in a way that cannot be shared with others.
After studying user experience and physical interaction at Hongik University, where he majored in digital media design, he went on to study sculpture at the Royal College of Art, expanding his background in the domain of contemporary art. He was selected as a resident artist for Hyundai Motor Group's Zero One, Goyang Residency of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and H-Art Lab of Hoban Cultural Foundation. His works have been repeatedly selected for numerous competitions by the Hyundai Motor Group, Arts Council Korea, Seoul Cultural Foundation, Platform L Contemporary Art Center, and others.
